BRATISLAVA, March 13, (WEBNOVINY) — President Ivan Gasparovic told a press conference on Tuesday after his meeting with Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrusovsky (KDH) that the founding parliamentary session of the newly-elected National Council of the Slovak Republic will be convened on April 4. Gasparovic said that although the deadline for the founding parliamentary session falls on April 10, they decided to take red letter days into consideration and convene the session before Easter. Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrusovsky informed that newly-elected members of parliament would take their Parliamentary Oath and elect parliamentary bodies at the first meeting and parliament would then be legitimate to function for its four-year term.
Early parliamentary elections in Slovakia on Saturday ended with the generally expected result. SMER-Social Democracy is the clear winner with 83 mandates in the 150-member parliament, which gives the party the possibility to form a government alone. Christian Democrats (KDH) ended second with 16 mandates. In third place is the party Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OLaNO) of Igor Matovic with 16 mandates. MOST-HID, the party promoting cooperation of ethic Hungarian minority and the Slovak majority will have 13 representatives in parliament. Next is the SDKU-DS with 11 mandates and the neo-liberal SaS party with 11 mandates. Thus, there will be six parties in parliament for the next four-year term, with 83 mandates held by the center-left SMER-SD and 67 mandates controlled by five center-right parties.
