BRATISLAVA, December 18, (WEBNOVINY) – Head of state Ivan Gasparovic sent a telegram of condolence to Czech President Vaclav Klaus on the death of former president, anti-Communist dissident and playwright Vaclav Havel. Gasparovic also expressed deep condolences to Havel’s spouse and other survivors.
„We are all deeply touched by the sudden departure of prominent Czech politician and artist Vaclav Havel. A striking and respected symbol of the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution and a new democratic Czecho-Slovakia has left,“ the president said. According to the Slovak president, Vaclav Havel left behind a footprint not only in the modern history of the Czech and Slovak nations, but also in the history of new European democracies and unifying Europe. „He will forever remain in our memories as a charismatic and humane personality with a unique style of conducting politics”, the president concluded.
Vaclav Havel, who died Sunday morning at the age of 75, succumbed to long-term health problems. According to his assistant, Havel died at the family’s weekend home in Hradecek u Trutnova.
