BRATISLAVA, February 6, (WEBNOVINY) – The International Energy Agency (IEA) maintains that Slovakia has reserves in its energy policy. As IEA’s Executive Director Marie van den Hoeven told journalists on Monday, Slovakia should do more in boosting its energy security and industry competitiveness. According to the review of Slovak energy policy published by IEA this Monday, the country should also continue in diversifying its energy resources and intensifying regional integration. “Strengthening international cooperation, especially in developing natural gas and electricity grid interconnections is an essential move towards improving energy safety and market competition,” added Hoeven.

Slovak Economy Minister Juraj Miskov is glad that Slovakia keeps a “positive trend in the field of energy”. “It is important that according to IEA Slovak energy policy is consistent with its main goals: achieving energy security, environmental sustainability and economic growth,” commented Miskov.

The IEA report, mapping years 2005 to 2010, recommends Slovakia to focus on providing full utilization of energy saving potential including modernization of teleheating in the area of energy efficiency. IEA also recommends Slovakia to focus more on curbing the amount of greenhouse gases produced. “Slovakia needs to continue implementing the policies which make transition to low-carbon economy easier,” enclosed Hoeven, adding that nuclear energy and renewables should play the crucial role.
