BRATISLAVA, August 15, (WEBNOVINY) – Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic visited the flood-hit towns of Prievidza and Handlova on Sunday. “Water has decreased slightly. There are, however, substantial damages,” the minister said. In the evening, he will also visit the town of Novaky. In addition to the police and firefighters, also the Army with military technology are helping the people. Their task is to deepen river beds.

The interior minister asked the Trencin County Police Corps president to secure troops to guard evacuated houses at night. According to Lipsic, the government’s priority is to adopt flood prevention measures, as floods will probably occur more frequently. “Prevention was underestimated in the past,” he said.

In Handlova, Prievidza and Velka Causa, some inhabitants had to be evacuated after the morning storm. Firefighters are helping in the flood-hit Upper Nitra region. Water from the Handlovka river flooded streets and houses, washed away at least one bridge, damaged roads, and took away parked cars. Mayor of the town of Prievidza Jan Bodnar declared state of emergency through the news channel TA3 and called on people not to go outside unnecessarily. Water has flooded also several villages in Upper Nitra.
