BRATISLAVA, December 8, (WEBNOVINY) — Bank deposits in Slovakia will no longer be guaranteed without a limit. The Slovak Parliament approved an amendment to the law on deposit protection on Wednesday, which sets the limit of guaranteeing bank deposits to 100,000 euro from the end of 2010. Reducing the limit of deposits guarantee is based on an EU directive, which sets the limit for all EU member states to 100,000 euro. During the financial crisis, Slovakia introduced a full 100 percent guarantee of the deposited volume in November 2008 to provide stability of the financial market and trust of investors.
Publishing court decisions on the Internet, public selection procedures for the positions of judges and court chairmen, public judiciary testing, and cancellation of bonuses for judges is what is introduced by an amendment on judges and lay-judges from the workroom of Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska, which the Slovak Parliament approved on Wednesday. The amendment is part of the first package of measures following the objective of opening the judiciary to the public and public control. The approved draft is to bring greater transparency in the judiciary, reduce space for internal corruption and strengthen the independence of judges in their service.
Parliament also approved a revision to the law on gambling. The revised law will no longer contain a special category of a “casino in a recreational complex”. The Ministry of Finance introduced this kind of casino with a preferential tax regime in the law under Minister of Finance Jan Pociatek (Smer-SD). The law also introduced regressive levies. The current Finance Ministry suggested omitting this special category of casino as well as granting of a special kind of individual license from the law with the aim to unify terms of operation for all casinos.
