NITRA, September 4, (WEBNOVINY)- The LS-HZDS has found itself in a complicated but not dead-end situation, says party leader Vladimir Meciar. He stated after talks of the LS-HZDS national board in Nitra on Saturday that the party will seek election leader for the parliamentary elections in 2014. The name of the leader should be known in a year and a half. Vladimir Meciar however remains the party chairman for now. “The post of election leader is open for new people,” he said. After the election leader takes up s/he should become also the chairman of the party, maintains Meciar. He underscored that he does not know at the moment who will be the leader and whether he will be a member of the party or is yet to join it..
Meciar informed that Bratislava regional head Diana Strofova and head of the regional organization in Zilina Vladimir Pavelka had stepped down. He expects several members of the party leadership to quit. However, the election outcome does mean the end of his party, thinks Meciar. The party, which failed to make it to parliament for the first time during its existence wants to continue on the Slovak political scene. Meciar underscored that the party has to undergo consolidation, based on the national and social pillars. The LS-HZDS is preparing a shadow cabinet as well.
Meciar does not perceive the election outcome as the victory of the opposition but as a defeat of the former ruling coalition. “The coalition needlessly lost the election,” he said. According to him, 26 percent of the electorate gave support to the current ruling coalition meaning that it does not have support of 74 percent. The LS-HZDS boss said that the government weak not having support of citizens. Meciar also criticized how values are made relative in Slovakia pointing out that the “promoter of drugs and homosexuals could become the speaker of parliament.”
Meciar thinks that the LS-HZDS stayed away from parliament because of mistakes of both SMER-SD and his own party. According to him the LS-HZDS erred when it planned pre-election and post-election cooperation with SMER-SD. “We cooperated with SMER, discussed the same topics. We should have communicated differences. We did not understand that SMER is complacent and wants to rule alone,“ stated Meciar. .
The party wants to achieve the best result in the municipal elections. Its regional organizations are not limited in forming coalitions. The LS-HZDS does not regard the upcoming referendum its matter. “It is to serve only SaS presentation,” stated Meciar.
