NATO Ordnance Disposal Center of Excellence Opens in Trencin

TRENCIN, May 17, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak Defense Minister Lubomir Galko has opened on Tuesday the NATO Ordnance Disposal Center of Excellence in Trencin (western Slovakia), in the presence of several ambassadors. “We cannot stop seeking ways to foresee attacks and prevent killings and injuries caused by explosions not only in the case military units but also regarding civilians,“ he said. In the center, soldiers will be trained for liquidation of explosive devices.

The Trencin center is the sixteenth certified top training and research center of the alliance. It took about six years to build. It should provide both theoretical and practical training for bomb disposal experts. Its specialists will prepare specialists and commanders focused on work with explosive devices. Currently soldiers from Finland are being trained in Trencin and this training will last three weeks. The center is to serve all NATO states.

The Trencin excellence centers will also administer a detailed database of all knowledge from the given field. In case of need, specialists of the center will serve as consultants for the whole NATO. Centers of excellence are financed by individual countries as part of the NATO solidarity-based defense policy.

NATO members started building excellence centers after the 2002 summit The first one was established in 2005 in Germany being focused on the air force. Each center is specialized in a specific military area.
