BRATISLAVA, February 7, (WEBNOVINY) – Former prosecutor general Dobroslav Trnka, whose term in office expired on February 2, will be able to run for re-election. This was made possible in a draft amendment to the law on the prosecutor office, which Prime Minister Iveta Radicova and Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska presented at a news conference on Monday.

“I am glad this part made it to the bill,” stated Radicova. The reason why a transitory stipulation, based on which the new wording of the law will not apply to the person who was appointed to the post of prosecutor general before May 1, 2011 has been included in the draft is so that the proposed revision is not retroactive or discriminatory. In line with the amendment that is to take effect in May of this year, the same person may not become prosecutor general more than once.

The draft amendment to the law on prosecutor office, submitted for interdepartmental review on Friday brings changes that are to make the work of prosecutors more transparent. The Office of Prosecutor General is to be subject to public scrutiny, equally as courts, and it introduces open election of prosecutor general. Prosecutor offices will have to make public their decisions, which close criminal proceedings. Also verdicts of disciplinary committees will have to be published.
