BRATISLAVA, April 27, (WEBNOVINY) – Parliament will hold a new secret election of the new prosecutor general at the beginning of the parliamentary session starting in May, given the ruling of the Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic, Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulik announced on Tuesday. Sulik did not comment on how the coalition deputies would approach to the vote. “I will definitely not comment on the election procedure; as the Constitutional Court objected to excessive coordination among other issues. The ballot will be secret as required by the Constitutional Court,” he announced. In his words, the coalition is determined to change the ballot from secret to public by overriding the presidential veto since Ivan Gasparovic returned the respective amendment to the parliament.
At the Coalition Council meeting on Tuesday, the coalition leaders further discussed Slovakia’s reaction to Hungary’s newly adopted constitution. KDH leader Figel admitted that the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee may draft a statement to the constitution. Coalition partners also dealt with lifting deputy immunity in case of transgressions. The proposal to curb the immunity should be tabled at the upcoming parliamentary session. “The revision to resolve the immunity of MPs regarding transgressions will be submitted by Friday,” Sulik remarked.
The constitutional rights of former General Prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka were violated in two rounds of a secret ballot of the new prosecutor general by parliamentary deputies, the Constitutional Court ruled earlier this month. Former General Prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka, who ran for re-election at the end of last year, lodged a complaint at the Constitutional Court regarding results of the previous two rounds of election alleging that his constitutional rights were violated by the procedure of parliamentary deputies in the vote. He also demanded declaring the vote invalid and announcing a new secret ballot.
