BRATISLAVA, December 9, (WEBNOVINY) — The Slovak Parliament will try to elect a new Ombudsman in a public vote on Tuesday. Speaker of Parliament Pavol Hrusovsky (KDH) said on Friday, the eighth day of the 26th session of parliament, that none of the MPs have requested a change to a secret ballot, which was made possible by the amended wording of the parliamentary standing order. The former ruling coalition enacted this possibility of a public vote after it was repeatedly unable to elect its candidate as the new Prosecutor General in a secret ballot.
The only candidate for the post of Ombudsman is MP and former judge Jana Dubovcova (SDKU-DS). She was nominated by three former ruling coalition parties SDKU-DS, SaS, and MOST-HID. „Jana is Dubovcova is indeed a good candidate,“ Deputy Speaker of Parliament Milan Hort (SDKU-DS) was trying to persuade his colleagues in parliament as the candidate was introduced. If she is elected, Dubovcova will replace Pavol Kandrac (LS-HZDS nominee), whose mandate ends on March 27, 2012.
The election of the Ombudsman will not take place today. Hrusovsky announced that parliament will try to elect the new Ombudsman, a Vice-President of the Supreme Audit Office, the missing ninth member of the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission, two candidates for member of the Council for Regulation, and candidates for selection panels that decide on contests to fill vacant posts of judges and a member of the Radio and Television Slovakia Council on Tuesday December 13.
Following the presentation of candidates, Hrusovsky interrupted in the plenary session until Tuesday, 9:00 AM. Additional agenda for Tuesday can include items related to the fulfillment of the memorandum that protesting hospital doctors signed with the government.
