BRATISLAVA, September 9, (WEBNOVINY) — Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Richard Sulik remains in his post. Eighty-five MPs participated in the secret voting to oust him, and two ballots were invalid. To sack Sulik, SMER’s initiative needed the support of seventy-six deputies. Sixty-four MPs voted to recall the SaS leader from the post, eighteen were against and one lawmaker refrained from voting.
Coalition deputies for SDKU-DS, the Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) and MOST-HID did not participate in the voting. Chairman of the KDH deputy caucus Pavol Hrusovsky commented that this move was not supposed to hint at anything. The lawmakers allegedly showed their support for Sulik by their absence. It was a political agreement attained also at the Coalition Council, he added. Sulik noted that the four coalition parties agreed in advance of the voting that solely deputies of SaS would vote, just to ensure the validity of the ballot.
Sulik could not specify how many lawmakers representing his party actually voted; he himself refrained from the voting.
