BRATISLAVA, May 2, (WEBNOVINY) — The project to build a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice is still alive. The company JESS, a.s., owned by the state-run nuclear decommissioning company JAVYS and the Czech energy group CEZ, is planning a feasibility study. JAVYS spokesman Dobroslav Dobak told SITA news agency that JESS is currently preparing all materials necessary for the feasibility study.
The project of construction of a new nuclear power plant in Slovakia should not be affected by this year’s catastrophe in Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, whose reactors were damaged after a devastating earthquake and a tsunami. According to Dobak, all new findings regarding increasing security are being incorporated into the project. “It is too early to comment on the impact of events in Japan, but the feasibility study will certainly take into account all such new facts,” he said.
Following a meeting with Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Martin Kocourek, Slovak Economy Minister Juraj Miskov stated at the end of last year that the decision on the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice would only be known after a thorough review of results of the feasibility study. “This is expected no sooner than in early 2012,” said the economy ministry then.
The new nuclear power plant should have one or two pressure water reactors. According to preliminary information, installed capacity should not exceed 1 700 megawatts and costs are projected between EUR 4 billion to EUR 6 billion. Financing should not be from public sources. The new power plant should be built before 2020, whereby the preparatory phase should last until 2014, when construction should begin. A feasibility study for this project should be finalized in the first half of next year.
