BRATISLAVA, December 3, (WEBNOVINY) – SMER-SD will never agree with public election of the prosecutor general . “The reason why a secret ballot is a good thing is that Mrs. Radicova cannot make threats and no one can give the deputies specific orders on how to vote,” said the SMER-SD Chairman Robert Fico at a news conference on Friday. The ruling coalition announced on Thursday they were considering the possibility of changing the secret ballot to a public one. However, the governing parties have not found a consensus on this issue yet. They plan to discuss it at the Coalition Council session on Monday. Robert Fico feels sorry that the change in voting on the prosecutor general is motivated by the fact that the coalition is unable to elect him in a secret ballot. “What the incumbent governing coalition is performing regarding this issue is a shame for the whole Slovak Republic,” Fico added.
The SMER-SD leader emphasized that even the former Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar did not abolish the secret ballot regarding personal issues. The elections in the Federal Assembly before 1989 during the times of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic were public. “All decisions on personal issues were made publicly with raising a hand. This is what our democrats, our moralists want – who say ‘we are nicer, better, more polite, we will show you’. This is where it goes,” he noted.
Fico assumes that on Tuesday in the second round of the secret ballot the coalition MPs will take over their ballot papers and leave the house, thus making the election impossible. Then they will look for a new way of election.
The coalition was unable to elect the Prosecutor General for the third time. Two rounds of the first election and the first one of the second ballot were unsuccessful. The second round of the second secret vote will take place on Tuesday.
