The Antitrust Office of the Slovak Republic found out in an investigation that deep coal mining is several times more expensive than surface mining, affecting the final price of the coal.
The Antitrust Office of the Slovak Republic halted the investigation into the extraction of lignite for the purposes of electricity generation. Over the past months, the Office was examining the motion lodged by the spa company Kupele Bojnice over the alleged abuse of the dominant position by the company Hornonitrianske Bane Prievidza (HBP). „The high price of the lignite exploited in Slovakia underground compared to the prices of lignite exploited on the surface results from the Slovak government’s decision to pursue certain social goals such as employment sustainability through the general economic interest. The Office will not assess the substantiation of the deep lignite mining in Slovakia since this decision fully rests with the government,“ a spokeswoman for the Antitrust Office Adriana Olsavska informed.
