Slovakia continues to work on a small modular reactor (SMR) project. Currently, it has been awarded a $5-million grant for activities related to a decision on building small modular reactors as part of another project NEXT.
“Nuclear and nuclear energy are major topics in the energy sector because they will considerably help us decarbonize our industry, contribute to climate goals, but above all, they will ensure Slovakia’s energy security and independence. I am therefore very pleased that we, as a small country, achieved this big and significant success,” Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Denisa Sakova said.
“Electricity demand will grow. Small modular reactors are not supposed to replace our existing nuclear sources, which safely, reliably, and without direct carbon dioxide emissions, cover most of Slovakia’s power consumption. SMRs are supposed to complement the energy mix for the country’s energy self-sufficiency in the future. The grant that we have been awarded amid international competition is excellent news. It provides us with opportunities to accelerate preparations of projects that are important for our successful energy transition,” Slovenske Elektrarne Board Chairman Branislav Strycek said.
